Everything in the world is energy. This energy is always moving, always vibrating. If everything is vibrating, then each thing, including you, has its own unique frequency. This idea is central to deep yogic understanding: can we change our personal frequency, and how would that change bring more peace and harmony to our daily life? The journey into the Chakras and energy systems offers a gentle map to explore this inner landscape, moving beyond just the physical poses of yoga.
The Journey from Energy to Consciousness
Ancient wisdom tells us that before the creation of the universe, there was only a pure, unchanging Consciousness, often called Purusha or Shiva. At the moment of creation, this Consciousness manifested as primordial Energy, known as Prakriti or Shakti. This event started as a universal wave, or sound, known as Nada, similar to the Big Bang idea, but with Consciousness at the beginning.
The deepest part of the yogic path is about reversing this process: bringing the Energy back to its Source, Consciousness. This energy journey is symbolized by the ascent of Kundalini Shakti. This powerful, dormant energy rests at the base of the spine in the lowest energy center, the Mooladhara Chakra. The goal of practice is to gently guide this energy upwards through the central channel until it reaches the highest state of Consciousness at the Sahasrara Chakra, or the crown of the head.
To understand this process, we look at the subtle layers of our being, which are much more than just the physical body. Yoga describes five Koshas, or sheaths, that move from the obvious to the very subtle: the physical body, the energetic body, the mental body, the psychic body, and finally, the bliss body. When we explore the chakras, we are primarily studying the Pranamaya Kosha, the energetic sheath, which contains the force of Prana, or life force.
The Map of Inner Flow: Nadis and Chakras
The life force, Prana, moves throughout the energetic body through tiny channels called Nadis. The word Nadi simply means "to flow," like a river. It is said that there are 72,000 of these channels. However, three are considered most important:
Ida Nadi: This channel flows on the left side and carries the energy of the mind or thought, often called Intellectual energy.
Pingala Nadi: This channel flows on the right side and carries the physical or action energy.
Sushumna Nadi: This is the main central channel, associated with the spine, that needs to be clean and open for the Kundalini energy to rise.
Along this central channel are the Chakras, which are like energetic whirlpools or vortices. The word "Chakra" itself means "wheel" or "disk." While there are many chakras in the body, we usually focus on seven main centers. Each Chakra is a storage center for Prana and governs specific emotional, mental, and physical functions. They are symbolically represented as lotus flowers, where each petal and color carries special meaning.
Mooladhara (Root): Located at the base of the spine, connected to security and grounding.
Svadhisthana (Sacral): Located in the pelvis, connected to creativity and emotion.
Manipura (Solar Plexus): Located near the navel, connected to power and will.
Anahata (Heart): Located in the chest, connected to love and compassion.
Vishuddha (Throat): Connected to clear communication and truth.
Ajna (Third Eye): Located between the eyebrows, connected to intuition and inner seeing.
Sahasrara (Crown): Located at the top of the head, representing pure consciousness and connection.
Each Chakra relates to a different frequency and quality of life. By working with these centers through focused practice, breath, and meditation, you learn to cleanse and balance your energetic body. This balance is the true goal: a life where you are stable, creative, clear, and connected to your deepest self. This is how you gently and effectively alter your inner frequency to live a life of greater peace.
